RTC & TCG Game Creation by Yuhao Gho
Unforgiven
Overview
Unforgiven is a war game that combines his favorite genres, RTS and TCG. The game will ask players to customize their decks and play against AI or other players in a fair setting for both. It has unique gameplay that allows players to enjoy the fun of the strategy of their cards and not worry about resource management.
Purpose
Unforgiven is a passion project that reflects my childhood dream of making my own video game and for my portfolio. I already posted my game on itch.io but would love to post my game on bigger platforms such as Steam, Appstore, Google Play, etc. I also considered being part of the “RTS revolution” that brings back many great RTS games such as “Command and Conquer” or “Age of Empire” so that I can advertise my game to gamers who are eagerly looking for some fun new games.
The Process
Concept Development
I first developed this game by playing a card game called “Quicky,” where players can play cards as fast as they want. Then I system-researched card game rulebooks and card designs to design my physical copies of the game, it was initially called Beat’em.
Game Development
I started with both players customizing a 40-card deck to compete with each other. Players in the game will start with 50 health and 5 cards from their deck. Each game has 12 turns for players to compete. Each player will have 5 seconds of consideration time before each turn starts to strategize their cards and 10 seconds of action time after the turn starts to play cards on the game board. When the action time is over, both players must stop their actions. Then, the conclusion starts, all cards will attack or cast their effects during the conclusion. To win a game, beat your opponent’s health bar with your cards until it’s 0 or lower.
Alpha Testing (Game Play)
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
Beta Testing (Advertising)
In my beta testing, I created a teaser video for my game and a testing version game which I uploaded on itch.io. I hosted a playtesting event in the Next Level Expresso card shop and gathered feedback from people who played the game with a survey. I noticed many people start to appreciate the gameplay, but some still think there is room to improve. So, I collect all their feedback and utilize them for my final work.
Final Project
For my final work, I have finished the final version of my game, I put in all feedback from different age groups and gamers with various gaming experiences including my professors and classmates. I then smoothed the learning curve for players to learn the game faster, adding sounds so players could recognize the cards and actions on the battlefield, and putting up advertisements for the game with a fully developed teaser video and partial background stories.
